‘Au Fil de L’Eau’ is translated from French as ‘By the Water’. Think about a castle or fancy restaurant located next to the river or lake. If you sit at the terrace looking over the water, you can see those shimmery grey-blue colors!
The Chanel makeup products’ names are getting more and more complicated. I can imagine American customers trying to pronounce ‘Au Fil de L’Eau’ at big department stores)) Fortunately, they don’t need a Master’s Degree in French in order to buy this eyeshadow, because there’s a number 358!
Fancy packaging with Camellia flower-shaped eyeshadows is another way to intimidate experienced luxury makeup consumers. But let’s focus on the product itself. Our goal is to find out if Chanel eyeshadow quad 358 Au Fil de L’Eau is worth buying.
According to the Chanel website, Chanel Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow Palette 358 Au Fil de L’Eau represents watery reflections that create light and depth. There are four colors:
– A highlighter with subtle pink and gold sparkles (top left on the palette);
– A peach with subtle pink reflections (top right);
– A sweet pearly grey with a hint of blue (bottom left);
– A slightly satiny grey (bottom right).
The eyeshadow palette 358 Au Fil de L’Eau has a very interesting texture: something between cream and dry eyeshadows. That’s how the new innovative texture is described at Chanel website:
• An exceptional concentration of pure pigments for a wider range of effects and intensities
• A jellifying system and a blend of polymer and spherical powders for:
– a soft, creamy, glide-on texture
– shades that blend together perfectly
– an even makeup result
• Easy application
The colors are quite pigmented, even though they look sheer on the swatches chart.
I agree with all the points above: these eyeshadows are easy to apply with a bare finger or brush. The texture is super soft and pigmented. When applied, 358 Au Fil de L’Eau looks like cream eyeshadows which produce a very fresh, contemporary effect.
In order to demonstrate how 358 Au Fil de L’Eau colors look, I decided to compare it with another fabulous Chanel eyeshadow palette 334 Modern Glamour.
Chanel Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow palette 334 Modern Glamour contains matte black, shimmery olive-grey, shimmery white and shimmery dark grey.
For this look, I used 358 Au Fil de L’Eau palette: light matte peach color on my lids, shimmery white highlighter under eyebrows and shimmery grey-blue as eyeliner (using YSL eyeliner brush).
For my lips, I used Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick 91 Seduisante.
As you can see, the shimmery grey-blue eyeliner turned really blue on me!
For my second look, I also used 358 Au Fil de L’Eau palette: dark shimmery grey on my lids and as eyeliner, shimmery white highlighter under eyebrows and shimmery grey-blue on my lids on top of dark grey. The two grey shades blend very well together!
As you can see, the dark grey turned really blue on me again!
For my lips, I used Chanel Camélias D’Eau Lip Palette (Fougueuse shade).
For my third look, I used Chanel eyeshadow palette 334 Modern Glamour: shimmery olive-grey on my lids, shimmery white highlighter under eyebrows and shimmery dark grey as eyeliner.
This is very casual everyday look. More dramatic evening looks can be created with 334 Modern Glamour palette.
For my lips, I used Chanel Camélias D’Eau Lip Palette (Exaltée shade).
As you may notice, the dark grey eyeliner from 334 Modern Glamour palette turned a little bit blue on my skin, but not as much as grey eyeliners from 358 Au Fil de L’Eau palette.
My verdict is: if you don’t like blue eyeshadows, Chanel Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow Palette 358 Au Fil de L’Eau is not for you! If you like a smoky eye look with shimmery grey and matte black, get yourself Chanel eyeshadow palette 334 Modern Glamour. I like both palettes, so I’m going to keep them!
